Talc Tolchin began his journey as a music teacher when he started piano lessons at the age of 7 with his mother in Brooklyn, NY. He later studied with renowned private instructors, including Mike Garson, who became David Bowie’s pianist, and Frank Martin, the arranger and pianist for Grammy-winning producer Narada Michael Walden. For the past decade, he has continued his education at The Jazz School in Berkeley. In the 70s, Talc worked with the artist Sylvester (Mighty Real) and the Weather Girls (It’s Raining Men). He produced a 10-volume video series, Learn The Essentials Of Piano, available in libraries across the country, and has been teaching privately for 50 years.
Throughout his career, Talc Tolchin has been writing songs in the R&B, gospel, and jazz genres, producing them in his home studio. He has also adapted to modern teaching methods by offering lessons via Zoom to students throughout the US, Europe, and Asia.
In addition to his teaching, Talc Tolchin is an expert piano technician with nearly 50 years of experience. He apprenticed at Universal Musical Instrument Co. in NYC and took classes at the Piano Technicians Guild. As a full-service technician, he can repair any piano needs, regulate, restring, replace hammers, and fix broken parts, covering the entire San Francisco Bay Area.
"Talc Tolchin is an excellent music teacher. He quickly attends to each student's unique musical aptitude and interests. With a wonderful sense of humor and without judgment, he creates a comfortable, safe space for learning and development. I highly recommend him!"

Talc Tolchin is a patient and friendly music teacher with a wealth of experience that helped me overcome the trap of playing the same handful of songs for years. Not only have I learned to practice effectively, I have improved my improvisation from chaotic doodling to having more structure and musicality. I definitely recommend him if you are looking to learn jazz and/or pop piano.

Talc Tolchin is a knowledgeable and supportive music teacher. I have taken lessons from him for several years and have learned so much. Coming from a classical background, he has opened my eyes to a different way to approach piano playing that I find really enjoyable.

Talc Tolchin molded a curious 6-year-old into a strong and focused piano aficionado. From our original in-person lessons with this dedicated music teacher, through pandemic-driven remote sessions, he has helped Jayden develop into not only a disciplined piano player but also a disciplined young man. As parents, during the pandemic, we sometimes struggled with structure and authority. I remember key moments listening as Talc instilled the structure through authority that Jayden needed during those tough times. Our family is forever grateful for the tutelage Talc has provided on and off the keys. Jayden, now 14, plays piano daily with passion and a hunger to excel in his craft. We cannot wait to see where this journey with Talc will take him.
